Patricia Schmitt is program director of the JamesCare for Life: Comprehensive Oncology Rehabilitation Program. She has been with the program since its inception in 1994 when she served as the only fulltime staff member. She has played a key role in its continuous growth and development and now directs a team of 10 staff members. |
Pat is a graduate of The Ohio State University where she received her undergraduate degree in English, master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, and completed postgraduate coursework in clinical psychology. Her primary research interests are adaptation and adjustment to chronic illness; integrative health and wellness.; and cancer survivorship.
Pat is a published author, lecturer and funded grant writer. During her career with OSU and with The James, she has authored or co-authored grants and proposals that have resulted in a cumulative total of over $500,000 in funding.
She serves on a number of local boards and committees of organizations including the American Cancer Society and Wellness Community. She has been a grants reviewer at both the local and national levels. She recently completed a five-year term on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Rehabilitation Counseling. She teaches the cancer rehabilitation module of the Basic Oncology Nursing Course each quarter and has also served as a group facilitator and instructor for various courses in the Medical Humanities Curriculum for OSU medical students.
Pat is the recipient of a number of awards for Excellence in Patient Education including Interdisciplinary Team Excellence and Excellence in Community Health. Among the most rewarding aspects of her position are the opportunities to collaborate with staff, patients and families in the development and implementation of new programs and services. Additionally, it is a great privilege for her to share the cancer journey with both patients and family caregivers in her facilitation of cancer support groups.
