Phyllis Pirie, PhD, is an expert in the evaluation of community-based health programs. Her research includes programs that prevent smoking by youth and programs that curb smoking by pregnant women including studies on the effects of second-hand smoke on infants and children. Her teaching focuses on health program evaluation, data collection and the study of lifestyle factors as they relate to health and disease. Dr. Pirie was the evaluation director for the Minnesota Heart Health Program and later for the Minnesota Youth Tobacco Initiative. She founded and directed the Data Collection and Support Services unit, a survey group supporting projects in the Division of Epidemiology and throughout the health sciences at the University of Minnesota.
