Dr. James Merlino is an attending colorectal surgeon in the Department of Surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center. He has an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor in Surgery at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He has a background in Business and Political Science and attended medical school at Case, receiving his MD in 1997. Before joining the Department of Surgery at MetroHealth, he completed his residency training in general surgery at University Hospitals of Cleveland, and did a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. During his residency, he took time off as an Allen Scholar in surgical research, completing Masters level training in surgical clinical outcomes.

Dr. Merlino is a member of a number of local and national professional organizations and is the recipient of several awards and honors. He has primary clinical interests in colon cancer screening, the treatment of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, and laparoscopic colon surgery. His is also doing work in the promotion of medical efficiency, and using the collection of surgical outcomes to improve surgical care.
