Standardization studies of the VTI (Visual Technologics Institute) tracking system. The VTI sinus tracking system is being applied to children and normalized. results will be compared to adult studies to determine the application of the technology to children.
-
Assessment of the laryngeal adductor reflect reflex in children with laryngomalacia.
-
Assessment of hypopharyngeal sensation in children with swallowing problems. A Pentex endoscope blow calibrated puffs of air on various hypopharyngeal structures and larynx and the effect of this stimulus is observed.
-
Validation of endoscopic swallow studies in children. Endoscope may interfere with normal swallow processes. this study performed pre & post endoscope passage swallow studies to document radiographically that the swallow process is not affected.
-
Development of quantitative endoscopy. An image size can be quantitatively measured by using a calibrated endoscope (rigid or flexible) by capturing two images a known distance apart. The distance from the object is not required.
-
Muscle abnormalities associated with velopahryngeal insufficiency. Many children with normal soft musculature develop velopharyngeal insufficiency. Certain syndromes are also associated with velopharyngeal insufficiency yet no structural abnormalities of the velopharyngeal mechanization can be determined.Muscle biopsies are being examined for signs of abnormalites that can be related to velopharyngeal insufficiency.
-
Cochlear implanation materials. Non-lead based ceramic materials are being evaluated as a means of direct stimulation of the 8th nerve complex in response to sound energy deformation.
-
CMV induced hearing loss in animal models.
A guinea pig model has been developed where cytomegalovirus has been shown to cause sensorineural hearing loss. Immunization strategies are being developed for protection against CMV infection.
-
Diagnosis of swallowing disorders in children.
An endoscopic evaluation of swallowing technique has been developed for use in children. Outcomes research is being performed to define the efficacy of this procedure in the workup of children with feeding disorders secondary to medical and structural problems.
-
Expression of TGF-alpha in a skin substitute model.
A composite skin graft has been created utilizing free Fibroblasts graft in a collagen matrix and an epithelial lining over the top of the collagen. The presence of TGF-alpha has been demonstrated in this skin substitute model.
-
Collagen subtypes in subglottic stenosis.
Subglottic stenosis develops from an abnormal deposition of collagen. The inflammatory process resulting in subglottic stenosis is being evaluated and the collagen subtypes deposited within the scar are being defined. The relationship of these collagen subtypes is being related to growth factors.
-
Vocal cord function after laryngotracheoplasty.
Vocal function is being assessed utilizing a Kay Elemetric Voice Lab and Videostroboscopy System. The structures utilized in phonation are being determined. The vocal quality of utilizing these structures is being addressed.
