Lupus

Relationship between Lupus and Steven Johnson

09/29/1999

Question:

What is the relationship of Steven Johnson syndrome to Lupus? I have had several bouts of this and some physicians are calling it Lupus II. There is very little written about the syndrome that I can find. Thanks.

Answer:

I am unaware of a direct association between Lupus and the Steven Johnson syndrome. However lupus patients have a higher frequency of allergic reactions and adverse effects as a result of the use of antibiotics and, in particular, sulfonamides which are a cause of Steven Johnson syndrome.
