Prostate Cancer

Effectiveness of Saw Palmetto and Proscar Medications

10/01/1999

Question:

A friend of mine over 60 years old uses a herb called Saw Palmetto to help urine flow. Is this safe and is it effective? I took Proscar for a year but was ineffective.

Answer:

Saw Palmetto is safe and appears to be effective in some patients. The herb is being used with increasing frequency and there are many studies currently being carried out as to its effectiveness. Proscar also is of value in some patients. It appears that one must be on the medication for about a year to begin to experience some relief in symptoms and the longer one is on the medication, the more effective it becomes.
