HIV and AIDS

How Many More Times Should I Get Tested?

10/11/1999

Question:

I had oral sex with a partner 6 months ago and recently got my test back negative. The person does not have an extensive sexual background and I have not had any encounters with anyone since then. How many more times should I get tested before I am out of the woods? I am a hypochondriac and every time I get a sore throat or headache I drive myslef crazy thinking it's the virus. Should I be this worried?

Answer:

An HIV test 6 months later should be adequate. I would not recommend further testing for THAT episode. However, you may want to consider some schedule of regular testing -- say once each year -- if you are sexually active with different partners. Also, using a condom during oral sex would greatly decrease any chance of contracting HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases, as well as perhaps give you more peace of mind.
