Newborn and Infant Care

No tears

10/13/1999

Question:

My 9 week old daughter does not cry tears yet. Is this unusual? When will she start to have tears?

Answer:

Reflex tearing is present at birth or shortly after birth generally, but may be delayed for several weeks to months until the lacrimal gland begins to function. Unless there is evidence of redness, irritation, or inflammation, I would not be concerned with the lack of visible tears. I would recommend that you discuss this with your daughter`s health care provider at your next visit or sooner if you note any evidence of irritation of the eye.

Best of Luck!
