Parkinson's Disease

Drug holiday

03/17/2000

Question:

Could you go on a drug holiday from Aricept, and then start it again, for it to be more effective. It is being used for Cognitive Loss due to Parkinsons, mostly for putting on clothes and remembering numbers. Thank you

Answer:

In the few instances I have used Aricept in patients with PD I have not been impressed by its benefit. If anything, its procholinergic effects seem to make motor function worse. I do not see any harm in stopping the drug, but this should be discussed with your doctor.
