Tremor - Does it mean Parkinson's Disease?

08/10/1998

Question:

Hi Dr. Dalvi,

My uncle has had a slight tremor in his hands for as long as I can remember. Is it parkinsons?

Answer:

Without seeing your uncle, I cannot make a diagnosis. However, you may want to look out for the following:

The early signs of Parkinson's disease include shaking (tremor), stiffness (rigidity), slowness (bradykinesia). One of the most common presentations is shaking of one or the other hand. Other patients may note a change in handwriting that becomes smaller and less legible. Others may drag one foot while walking or develop a shuffling gait.
