HIV and AIDS

Do I Have A Good Chance Of Contracting HIV?

12/11/2000

Question:

I am 20 year-old female from Eastern Europe.I have had unprotected sex with several of my partners in the past. I have never had any "suspicious" symptoms of STD or AIDS, but I am really scared to test myself. What are my chances of contracting AIDS? Should I go and get tested without having a serious reason?

Answer:

Since you have had unprotected sex in the past on several occasions, it puts you at risk of acquiring HIV infection. Initial infection with HIV is usually asymptomatic. This latent period of HIV infection lasts about 7 -10 years. Therefore, even if you don`t have any symptoms it may not be unreasonable to get HIV tested.
