Parkinson's Disease

Vitamin # and Coenzyme Q10

12/28/2000

Question:

I knew about Vitamin E helping, but did not know at such high dosages. The book, "The Brain Wellness Plan," recommends only 200 IU of Vitamin E. It also recommends 200 mg of coenzyzme Q10. Has more been discovered whether this slows progression since the date of this article?(Note: Article referred to is "Are there treatments to slow the progression of Parkinson`s Disease?")

Answer:

I have not read the specific article you discuss so cannot comment on its specifics. In PD the largest study to look at Vitamin E was the DATATOP study. In this study, which had patients taking 2000 IU/day of Vit E, there was no evidence to show that it slowed progression. Peer-reviewed studies on Coenzyme Q-10 have yet to be published.
