Prednisone affect on breastfed baby

01/18/2001

Question:

I am getting conflicting medical opinions from two pediatricians. I have been prescribed prednisone for a 14 day period, but I am breastfeeding my two month old still. One pediatrician says ok for 5 days the other says the baby will not be affected at all. Who is right?

Answer:

The American Academy of Pediatrics has approved prednisone for use in breast feeding mothers. Research studies have shown that a dose of 80 mg/day in mothers produced insignificant absorption in the infant. Dr. Hale did recommend limiting dose and length of exposure if possible. However, it is extremely important that you NOT stop this drug with consulting your personal health care provider.
