Brain cyst

09/15/1998

Question:

what is a brain cyst and a brain tumor in a 12 year old male

Answer:

A cyst is a lesion that holds fluid or semisolid material while a tumor is a growth of tissue that creates either an enlargement or swelling. Each of these may be related to pathologic or disease conditions that are benign or cancerous, in origin. The size of the lesion or growth may be quite small or large.

Because a twelve year old no longer has an expandable cranial vault that surrounds the brain (largely due to bones being fused), symptoms are often related to pressure on the cranial nerves as a result of the growth. Common symptoms may include headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, sensitivity to light or even seizures.

Treatment of the cyst or tumor will depend on the specific type, including medications or surgery.
