Lupus

Overweight and lupus

02/14/2001

Question:

Thank you so much for your information, it was very helpful. I was dx with lupus two years ago. I am an LPN working with Alzheimers/Dementia patients. Question? Being 100+ overweight, will this have an effect with a patient that has Lupus? Thank you,

Answer:

Although, there is no direct impact of weight on lupus, some complications of lupus and obesity may intersect. For example, both overweight and lupus patients have a relatively increased susceptibility to atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, and their complications. Additionally, drugs such as prednisone that are used for lupus may further increase weight.
