Lupus

ANA and Cloroquine

02/25/2001

Question:

Can chloroquine cause a false positive ANA test?

Answer:

Cloroquine is an antimalarial drug which was also used to treat Lupus. More recently Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine) is used for certain cases of lupus. None of them is among the medications - even in the most extended list that I have seen - who induce positive ANA or drug-lupus. I never saw in the literature any case reports of cloroquine inducing ANA or lupus. If the cloroquine was given to a patient for lupus that would explain the positive ANA.
