SIDS Q03/18/2001 |
where can I find information on SIDS for a shool report?
There are several sources that may be useful for your research project on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Since you have requested this on the smoking cessation section - the issue of smoke exposure and SIDS is a concern. Based on a study in the Archives of Disease in Childhod, approximately 30-40% of all cases of SIDS could be avoided if all pregnant women stopped smoking in a population with 30% pregnant smokers. That study adds to earlier evidence for an association between smoking during pregnancy and SIDS.(ARCHIVES OF DISEASE IN CHILDHOOD. vol. 83, no. 3 (2000 Sep): 203-6.) In addition, in 1992 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a recommendation to put babies to sleep in the nonprone position and the after that the 1994 "Back to Sleep" campaign - an effort to have parents place their infants on their back to sleep. As a result, the U.S. rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has decreased more than 40%. The following websites by government agencies provide information on sleep position and SIDS.
