Precautions With Heavy Family History of Prostate Cancer

04/19/2001

Question:

Prostate cancer is quite prominent in my family and I would like to know the possibility of chances that I may in fact end up stricken. As far as I know, my great-grandfather, grandfather, and father have had it as well as my grandfather on my mothers side. What precautions should I observe in order to remain healthy?

Answer:

With a family history as you describe it is recommended that screening for prostate cancer should begin at age 40 and consist of a digital rectal examination of the prostate and a PSA (blood test). This should be done yearly. I hope this information is helpful to you.
