Breast Feeding

Hair loss and weaning

05/25/2001

Question:

I have been weaning my twins for the last month. They are almost 4 years old. They are down to 1 or 2 feedings a day. For about two weeks my hair has been falling out like crazy. Everytime I run my fingers through it 10 to 20 strands fall out. Could the hair loss be related to weaning?

Answer:

Hair loss may occur with weaning due to changes in the pituitary and thyroid function. If this continues for more than a month you need to see your health care provider.
