Infectious Diseases

My monocytes were elevated when I went to my doctor last. I looked it up on the internet and the list of possible causes seemed pretty scary. Is this commonly nothing to be worried about? My doctor doesn`t seem concerned about it.

Monocytes are one of the major white cells that protect the body from infection. There are a number of causes for elevated monocytes, and as you mention some of them may be frightening. However, the most common cause is laboratory error. If you are well and without symptoms, then it is most likely an error in the interpretation of what is a monocyte.
