Are Omega-3-fatty Acid Supplements and Borage Oil Safe to Take During Pregnancy?

07/12/2002

Question:

Are omega-3-fatty acid supplements and borage oil safe to take during (or prior) to pregnancy? I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have to go off NSAIDS during pregnancy. Thanks.

Answer:

Omega-3-fatty acid supplements have not been studied in pregnancy, but there is currently no reason to suspect that it will cause problems to the developing fetus. Borage oil should not be used. It is considered unsafe for human consumption. It contains toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be cancer causing and increase blood clotting.
