Are There Any Alternatives to Hysterectomy for Fibroid Treatment?

07/19/2002

Question:

Looking for alternative treatments to shrink my uterine fibroid tumors. Even without an ultrasound, doctors are advising me to get a hysterectomy, and that a myomectomy is out of the question, because they are so large.

Answer:

There hasn`t been research in this area, but many authors suggest that a phytoestrogen such as Black Cohosh may shrink fibroids. Since phytoestrogens (plant-based estrogens) are weaker than our body`s natural estrogens, and they compete for estrogen receptors, they actually decrease the estrogen`s effect of increasing the fibroid size. It may be helpful, but if your fibroids are so huge, the effect may be minimal. The key is how bad your symptoms are, and if you can afford to wait 6-12 months to see if phytoestrogens work.
