What is micro-opthalmia?

09/05/2002

Question:

I am trying to find information about a condition that causes blindness in newborns called "micro-opthalmia." I only know that it means "small pupils." Can you give me more information or another term that is used to identify it?

Answer:

Micro-ophthalmia, microphthalmia, and microphthalmos are all words that literally mean "little eye". It is a rare congenital (present at birth) eye disease that may be caused by inherited diseases, infections during pregnancy, or other causes during pregnancy like trauma and exposure to radiation or drugs (including alcohol). The small eye is usually totally blind because it did not develop a healthy cornea, lens, retina or optic nerve. There is no treatment for this condition.
