Asthma

Asthma as A Disease

12/16/2002

Question:

What type of disease is asthma? Is asthma a type of cancer? Is their a full cure for asthma?

Answer:

Asthma is a disease of the lungs that is caused by inflammation of the airways (bronchial tubes). The inflammation causes the muscles surrounding the bronchial tubes to contract and therefore narrow. This can lead to symptoms of shortness of breath and wheezing. The cause of asthma remains unknown, but it is not a cancer. There is no "cure" for asthma, but symptoms can be managed in most patients with medication. There is more information about asthma in the "health topics" section of the Netwellness web site.  (Follow link below.)
