Information on Coral Calcium

02/13/2003

Question:

What can you tell me about coral calcium - Is it just hype or is there some truth to it?

Answer:

Coral Calcium is a special mineral product formed by sea coral. It is said to be helpful in maintaining the body`s acid-alkaline balance, i.e., keeping the body from being too acidic. There seems to be a lot of press about its benefits, but I haven`t been able to find any scientific research to support these claims. That`s not to say that it is completely without merit. There is simply not enough information to answer one way or the other. These supplements are rich in calcium and magnesium. These are supplements that I recommend to my patients anyway, but, at this point, in cheap, generic formulas. Calcium should be taken 500mg three times per day, and magnesium 200-400mg per day.
