Breast Feeding

Norvasc

05/29/2003

Question:

Is it safe to breastfeed while taking Norvasc for hypertension?

Answer:

Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker that is used to treat hypertension. The American Academy of Pediatrics has not developed a statement regarding its safety in breastfeeding. Most calcium channel blockers do pass into breast milk, and may affect the baby by lowering their blood pressure. The best thing for you to do would be to discuss with your health care provider your desire to breast feed and have them evaluate your situation and other possible treatments.
