GERD Diet

12/10/2003

Question:

Can You Help Me With A very Strict Nutrition Diet For GERD

Answer:

Thanks for your question. The experts at NetWellness do not provide meal patterns for specific modified diets for medical conditions such as GERD. Some general guidelines include: 1. Avoid alcohol and caffeine 2. Limit intake of fatty, greasy foods as these may exacerbate your symptoms. Avoid fried foods, high fat desserts and rich foods such as lasagna or foods with cream sauce. 3. Lose weight if you are overweight. 4. Do not lie down within an hour after a meal. 5. Quit smoking if you smoke. 6. Eat foods as tolerated. Some people with GERD cannot handle spicy foods (like chili), whereas others have no problem with it. If you notice symptoms with spicy foods, avoid them. For a more individualized diet, I suggest you see a Registered Dietitian (ask your physician for a referral). You can also locate one on the American Dietetic Association web site. Click on the link below.
