Baby teeth grinding

03/15/2004

Question:

My 8 month old graandson just got his top 2 teeth. He grinds his teeth. What does this signify? How can we stop him? Should he see a dentist?

Answer:

Tooth "grinding" is very common among young children and rarely causes any significant problems. The habit may persist until the child`s permanent teeth begin to erupt (around age 6-7) but usually disappears by then. No attempt should be made to stop your grandson`s habit at this age. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that all children have their first dental appointment by the age of one year, and the dentist can provide you with more detailed information then.
