Stretched Nerve04/14/2004 |
For several weeks pain that starts in the groin(top of my left leg) has been severe when I get up or raise my leg such as getting into the car.I literally have to lift that leg by taking the weight with my hands cupped underneath and swing it in. When I saw the specialist for the 3rd Synvisc injection for my painful arthritic knee,he put me thru tests to check it out. On the test for me to push my bent leg against his hand, myleg couldn`t resist and just fell right down. Since I had spinal surgery last year,I have xrays of my entire spine, hip, and pelvic area. They showed nothing wrong,so this pain originates in the groin. He told me I have a stretched nerve, and it is not muscular weakness. We decided I`d try a month on Nuerontin before having the painful test for nerve response where needles are stuck in to check response. Now what is a stretched nerve? Is there anything I should or should not be doing with myleg to help repair this? I deeply appreciate any advice with thanks.
This is a difficult question to answer without examining you. If you have a pinched nerve in your back, this can cause pain and weakness in the leg. However, there are many other causes of leg pain like you describe. If the pain is only on the outside of the leg, then this can be caused by irritation of the iliotibial band (the large muscle on the outside of the leg) or trochanteric bursitis (inflammation of the fluid sac over the femur bone). If the pain is in the front of the leg, then this can be due to psoas bursitis. However, none of these last diagnoses causes weakness. If you have both pain and weakness, it is likely a nerve in the back that is pinched. Continue working with your current physician to diagnose and treat your problem.
