Breast Feeding

Breast Problem

04/16/2004

Question:

I have inverted nipples and my boyfriend makes me very uncomfortable because they won`t stay erect. Is there anything that I can do to make them stand out without causing problems later? Thanks for your help,

Answer:

If you were pregnant and planning to breastfeed I would suggest that you try wearing a breast shield (often called a Woolwich shield). The nipple is centered in the small opening. A bra is worn over the shield to hold the shield in place. The ring applies gentle put continual pressure on the areola. This makes the nipple protrude and stretches the adhesions. The bra you wear with the shield should not be too tight, as it may place excessive pressure on the areola.
