Symptoms of smoking05/28/2004 |
What are five symptoms of smoking?
If the intent of this question is to identify the physical consequences associated with smoking - there are many. "The Health Consequences of Smoking: A Report of the Surgeon General" was just released in May 2004. This is an update of the first report in 1964 that linked cigarette smoking and lung cancer. There are several main conclusions in the report:
- Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases and reducing the health of smokers in general.
- Quitting smoking has short and long-term benefits.
- Smoking cigarettes with low tar and nicotine ratings by machine provides no clear benefit to health.
The list of diseases caused by smoking as been expanded and confirms those identified in earlier Surgeon General Reports. Summaries can be found at: http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/health_effects/index.htm.
