Breast Feeding

Leaking during pregnancy

10/14/2004

Question:

I am 8 months pregnant and am leaking milk already. Should this be something to be concerned about or is this normal?

Answer:

Colostrum, an antibody rich yellow liquid is produced by the breast during most of the pregnancy. During the third trimester some women leak colostrum. Rub the colostrum into the nipple and areola. You may want to wear an absorbent pad to collect the colostrum being sure to change them frequently. Avoid wearing a plastic backed pad, as it will keep the nipple moist, and promote irritation of the nipple.

The last months of pregnancy are a good time to have your breast evaluated for breastfeeding.
