Dental neglect

10/26/2004

Question:

A parent does not take a 4 year old child with severe decay and pain to the dentist for treatment. Is this considered neglect in Ohio? What should a concerned adult do?

Answer:

Failure to maintain a child's oral health leading to chronic pain may constitute child neglect in Ohio. The parent may need help finding financial resources or a dentist to see the child. The local child protective services agency can provide assistance. The following web site provides contact information for each county in Ohio: http://www.pcsao.org/links.htm
