Child Abuse

Sibling Incest and Abuse

12/15/2004

Question:

I am a psychotherapist, LCSW, and have seen an adult woman who says her sister came to her bed for safety/comfort at ages less then five. I have seen a man whose four year older sister came to his bed for the same reasons. Both were upper middle class with distant, somewhat frightening parents. Both started sexual play-oral and manual. Both thought of it as loving and fun. Both have suffered as adults. I am not near any good libraries and can find nothing from the Web or colleagues. Is there any serious research on this? Any contact points?

Answer:

I am not a therapist and cannot direct you to any pertinent literature.  However, you may need to consider your reporting responsibilities if your clients are disclosing sexual abuse to you.
