Sippy Cups

01/18/2005

Question:

Are there drinks that are acceptable for childern to have in sippy cups? Do you agree that a sippy cup is a good transition tool between bottles and a regular drinking glass?

Answer:

Sippy cups are certainly acceptable for transitioning a child from a bottle to a glass.  Increased risk for dental decay occurs when the child is allowed to sip milk or sweetened juices frequently throughout the day.  The safest use of a sippy cup is to use it to feed the child at mealtime and not as a pacifier between meals.  If the child does use it between regular meals, it should be filled with water or sugar-free drinks.
