Smoking and Tobacco

How many people die...

How many people die because of tobacco in US?

According to the American Cancer Society's "Tobacco-Related Cancers Fact Sheet," tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths, or an estimated 440,000 deaths per year during 1995-1999 (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2004).

In 2004, more than 180,000 cancer deaths will be caused by tobacco use. (Source: Cancer Prevention and Early Detection 2004).

The American Cancer Society's website www.Cancer.org is an excellent source of information for statistics on tobacco-related deaths and illnesses. The Center for Disease Control, www.cdc.gov is another good source.
