Newborn and Infant Care

Marijuana

02/04/2005

Question:

I can't seem to find the effects of second hand marijuana smoke on a non-breastfed infant... (He is breastfed but it isn`t the mother smoking) Can you help me please?

Answer:

The effects of second hand marijuana on a newborn are really unknown. It's important to remember that newborns are growing and that their cells are rapidly dividing. So, if cell damage occurs it could possibly affect the child for a lifetime. The ideal situation would be to NOT expose your baby to second hand marijuana.

By all means discuss this with your health care provider.
