Retesting Ater Two Negative Results On the Eliza Test

05/10/2005

Question:

Hi there. I had unprotected sex about 5 months ago and it was one time and not for long. I got tested at the doctors at 4 months and it came back negative. I ordered 2 home ELISA tests from mirates.com so I could test myself. I did one at 4 and a half months and now one at the 5 month mark. All were negative. Would you say I'm out of danger at this point? I`ve learned a valuble lesson never to have unprotected sex again.

Answer:

Most people who become infected with HIV will develop a positive test within three months.  It can rarely take longer.  There have been a few reports of the test taking 6 months or longer to turn positive, but this is very unusual.
