Can African Red Tea Help With Restless Leg Syndrome?

05/02/2005

Question:

I read that African red tea (rooibos I think), can help with restless leg syndrome. Have you any information on this? Thanks.

Answer:

Rooibos tea originates from the leaves and stems of the indigenous South African plant Aspalathus linearis. It has gained much attention for clinical purposes in the case of nervous tension, allergies (dermatitis), and various digestive problems. Recently, antioxidative activity was also attributed to the tea on the basis of its flavonoid content. Rooibos tea contains a large amount of flavonoids and acts as a potent antioxidant. Specific references to trials in restless leg syndrome, however, were not found.
