Loosened Tooth Possible Causes

08/22/2005

Question:

I had a crown installed approximately two and half months ago, I had some discomfort for about a week or two after the install, sensitivity to hot and cold. It is now July 28th and the tooth has loosened and there is pain. The doctor did some adjusting so the bite would be a little easier. The doctor did this first to see if this would ease the pain. I grind my teeth a lot and the doctor said this could cause a problem with the movement of my tooth and the pain in my gums, do you think this could be a problem? The doctor also told me that if the adjusting doesn't work they might have to do a root canal, I hope it doesn't come down to this.

Answer:

Everything that you are describing sounds like frequently-heard symptoms. The treatment described also sounds like the normal course of action.
