Dental and Oral Health (Children)

No top middle teeth yet!

09/15/2005

Question:

My daughter is 1 year old and has 3 central botton teeth and only her canine teeth on top. Is this normal? I had someone suggest that she may need her gums cut in order for her middle top teeth to come down. Have you ever heard of this and is there reason to be concerned

Answer:

The timing and sequence of eruption of primary (baby) teeth varies from child to child. It is unusual, however, for the upper canine teeth to erupt before the incisors. Surgery to hasten eruption of primary teeth is rarely, if ever, indicated. Have your child examined by a pediatric dentist who may take an x-ray to verify the presence and eruption status of her teeth.
