Newborn and Infant Care

Hair loss

12/28/2005

Question:

My question is: My son is 3 weeks old and just recently lost his eyebrow hair. Is it normal? He was born with dark brown hair. Then I noticed it was kind of light brown, and now its gone. Is it normal? When will it grow back?

Answer:

Happily, this type of early hair loss is entirely normal. Babies are born with a combination of lanugo and vellus hair on their heads and eyebrows. These are not mature types of hair. The body sheds them early in life and replaces them with mature, terminal hair. This process takes longer to become visible in babies with fine hair.  Congratulations on your healthy baby!
