Conflicting Test Results02/16/2006 |
Lab values all normal. Uptake scan showed cold nodule on R side (with mass), but hyperthyroid on L side. Is this due to L side working for both sides of thyroid?
The answer to your question depends on the thyroid hormone levels in your blood. If the blood tests show that your thyroid gland is making too much thyroid hormone, then it is entirely possible that the left side of the thyroid is making too much thyroid hormone and suppressing the right side. In that case, the overactive left side of the gland should be treated and then the right side should be re-tested to make sure it starts functioning normally again. However, if the blood tests show that your thyroid is making a normal amount of thyroid hormone, then you should probably have a fine needle aspiration of the right side of the thyroid to find out what's going on there.
