Possible Stimulants to Help Alzheimer's Disease02/13/2006 |
On 9-20-05 I asked a question about stimulants that could be used to reduce excessive sleep in Alzheimer`s patients. The answer indicated that there were some that could be used. Would it be possible to name them, in order to point our primary care physician in the right direction.
There is no specific recommendation regarding which stimulant to use in Alzheimer's disease for apathy and excessive daytime fatigue, unfortunately. I would look for causes, as well as assessing the adequacy of their nighttime sleep first. However, Provigil is most commonly used among colleagues after such evaluation, unless insurance is an obstacle. Then Ritalin in low doses is often used.
