Obesity and Weight Management
How do you maintain your weight loss?
Thank you for writing. Similar to losing weight, maintaining weight loss involves monitoring calorie intake, incorporating regular physical activity, and continuing with supportive behaviors. Too often people feel that once they have lost weight, they no longer have to be accountable and will return to old habits, thus regaining. I tell people to think of maintenance as not only maintaining weight loss, but also the habits they've developed to help them lose weight.
According to the National Institutes of Health "Successful weight maintenance is defined as a regain of less than 6.6 lbs in 2 years. There are many strategies to help with this phase and keep you motivated. One that tends to show the greatest success is being involved in a support group either through weekly/monthly meetings or via phone or email communication.
Another idea is self-monitoring, such as keeping a journal. Record not only your food intake, but also exercise and any thoughts/feelings/comments regarding the day. This helps keep you accountable and may point out areas that need some work to help you in reaching your goals.
There are may online options for keeping records, such as ChooseMyPlate.gov. If you find yourself struggling or in need of more information you can locate a local registered dietitian through the American Dietetic Association's website www.eatright.com.
