Osteoporosis

Grapefruit and Fosamax

03/06/2006

Question:

I talked to someone today who is taking meds for high blood pressure. She said she can not eat grapefruit because of an interaction between the two. She suggested to me that there might be a problem with eating grapefruit while taking Fosomax. Is there any truth to this?

Answer:

Grapefruit has been found to affect the metabolism of some medications, but it should not affect Fosamax.  The important thing is to take Fosamax with a full glass of water on an empty stomach.  Do not eat or drink anything for a full half hour, and do not recline or lie down .
