Last week I was told by my doctor that I had osteopenia, and he told me to start taking 1200mg. of calcium and 800 mg. of vitamin D a day. Later in the week, I had a blood test that showed my calcium level was 10.l. - Should I be taking this much calcium in a supplement?
If your calcium level is within the normal range for your laboratory (and it would be normal in our laboratory), you should take the 1200 mg per day counting your food sources of calcium as part of that total. The body regulates the serum calcium level very closely and will get rid of what is not needed. Do not take more than 500 mg of calcium at one time because it will not be well absorbed.
