Can HIV Be Transfered Through Saliva Or Sweat?

12/08/1998

Question:

Can HIV be transferred through saliva or perspiration?

Answer:

As far as I know, HIV has not been isolated in sweat. HIV has been isolated in saliva, but the infectivity (i.e., the ability to transmit infection) is low, probably because the amount of HIV in the saliva is low. Although there was one case in which HIV may have been transmitted from a bite, multiple other studies have failed to show transmission this way.
