Breast Feeding

Breastfed infant with bloody stools

06/20/2006

Question:

My breastfed infant was having bloody stools at 2 weeks of age, they told me to eliminate dairy from my diet and then reintroduce it to see if that was the problem, so I did. It seemed to be the problem So I have now been off dairy for 2 1/2 weeks but his stools are still bloody. He is gaining weight and seems to be thriving, So could the blood in his stools be something more than just an allergic reaction???? Please help

Answer:

It is very hard to say what is the cause of his bloody stools with out a full history and examination of the child.  You should discuss this in depth with the childs health care provider and your lactation consultant.
