Osteoporosis

Fosamax and Dental Surgery Healing

05/22/2006

Question:

Hello,

My mother had a tooth extraction procedure done last year and had some difficulty with healing, which required antibiotics and mouth rinsing. It would seem to heal completely, but she would have several relapses, when it would get infected. It hasn`t been giving her any problems for a while now, but...

Could this be due to Fosamax as she has been on it for about 8 years? If so, is there any way to check if she has the condition of osteonecrosis? Are there tests to check jaw bone density?

Thank you!

Answer:

It is hard to say for sure what is happening.  To be cautious, I would recommend she discontinue the Fosamax until she is completely healed for several months.
